In a significant move to address the constitutional challenges that have surfaced after Hungary’s recent elections, President Tamás Sulyok engaged in discussions with representatives from the Venice Commission at Sándor Palace. The meeting highlighted ongoing constitutional disputes concerning the country’s public institutions, emphasizing the need for expert intervention.
The delegation from the Venice Commission, a respected advisory body on constitutional law under the Council of Europe, was led by its President Marta Cartabia, along with Director and Secretary Simona Granata-Menghini, and Austrian Commission member Christoph Grabenwarter. Their visit underscores the importance of finding resolutions that are consistent with European constitutional norms.
President Sulyok had reached out to the Venice Commission in May, formally requesting their expert advice to navigate these legal complexities. The commission, recognizing the urgency of the situation, agreed to prioritize the matter, initiating consultations in Budapest to thoroughly assess the situation and gather necessary information.
The involvement of the Venice Commission has been met with optimism by the Presidential Office, which expressed confidence that the body’s recommendations will be instrumental in maintaining Hungary’s constitutional integrity.
