At the recent European Council summit, key discussions were centered on Ukraine’s bid for EU membership, sanctions policies, and the wider economic challenges confronting the European Union, according to Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar. He highlighted that the summit’s conclusive statement on Ukraine comprised only the language that had been unanimously agreed upon by all EU member states. A proposal that sought to expedite Ukraine’s accession process was notably removed after consultations among the countries.
The issue of Ukraine’s path to joining the EU continues to be a point of contention within the bloc, as some member states express apprehensions about the pace of accession and the possible economic ramifications it might entail. The summit provided a platform for these discussions, underscoring the complexities involved in expanding the union’s membership.
During the gathering, Prime Minister Magyar engaged in discussions with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, addressing Hungary’s ongoing Article 7 procedure and other EU-centric matters. He also had a meeting with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and took part in sessions with leaders from the Visegrád Group, a cultural and political alliance of four Central European countries.
Magyar underscored the significance of reinvigorating Visegrád cooperation among Central European nations, confirming plans for continued regional talks to be held in Hungary. Meanwhile, EU leaders are anticipated to persist in their deliberations regarding the bloc’s long-term budget framework set for the period from 2028 to 2034, an agenda item that remains crucial for the future economic planning of the union.
