Instagram is making a significant overhaul to its video experience by testing a Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode for Reels and launching a fully optimized iPad application. These changes are set to provide users with more convenience and a superior viewing interface across different devices.
The PiP mode will enable Reels to play in a compact, floating window, allowing users to multitask without pausing their video. This feature, already a staple on competing platforms, has been a top request from Instagram users. Its introduction is expected to drastically improve user engagement by keeping content on-screen even when other apps are being used.
Creators stand to benefit immensely, as this feature could lead to higher retention rates and longer average watch times. A viewer interrupted by a notification is now less likely to abandon the video. The feature is currently in a limited test phase, but its success could lead to a quick global rollout. Users will have the option to disable it.
Complementing this is the new native iPad app, which finally offers tablet users an experience tailored to their device. The app features a redesigned layout and a dedicated Following tab, making it a much more powerful tool for both consuming and creating visual content on a larger screen.
