Instagram Removes Encrypted DMs: The Open Letter Campaign

by admin477351

Following Meta’s confirmation that end-to-end encryption will be removed from Instagram direct messages by May 8, 2026, digital rights organizations have begun organizing responses. Privacy advocates around the world are calling for action. Campaigns including open letter efforts are being organized to pressure Meta to reverse its decision or introduce alternative privacy protections.

Encryption on Instagram was introduced in 2023 as an opt-in feature following Zuckerberg’s 2019 commitment. Privacy advocates had hoped the feature would eventually become the default. Meta’s decision to remove it has galvanized the advocacy community.

After May 8, all Instagram DMs will be accessible to Meta. Digital rights organizations are using this moment to build public awareness about the importance of encryption and to demand better from major platforms. Open letters signed by civil society organizations, security researchers, and privacy experts are being prepared.

Law enforcement agencies including the FBI, Interpol, and national bodies in Australia and the UK had pushed for this change. Child safety advocates backed their position. Australia reportedly saw the feature deactivated before the global deadline.

Digital Rights Watch is among the organizations coordinating the response. Tom Sulston argued that the removal of Instagram’s encryption must not be met with silence. He and others believe that sustained public pressure and organized advocacy can still influence how Meta uses its newly expanded access to DM data and whether it reconsiders its decision to remove encryption entirely.
