Greek expatriates in Saudi Arabia are expressing pride in Greece’s military support for the Kingdom, viewing it as a strengthening of bilateral relations amid escalating regional tensions. Greece has deployed Patriot air defense systems to Saudi Arabia, aimed at safeguarding critical infrastructure, including vital energy facilities along the Red Sea coast. This deployment signifies a growing defense partnership between the two nations, driven by mutual interests in regional security.
Ioannis Barmpounis and Dimitra Chasapi, Greek residents in Saudi Arabia, have emphasized the personal significance of Greece’s contribution to Saudi Arabia’s protection. They highlight the strong ties they maintain with their homeland while living in the Kingdom and appreciate the mutual trust and respect shared by Greek and Saudi societies.
On October 15, Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias visited the Greek Patriot air defense contingent stationed in Yanbu. During his visit, Dendias reaffirmed Athens’ commitment to supporting Saudi security and engaged in discussions with Saudi leaders regarding defense cooperation and regional developments.
The partnership has gained importance amid concerns over potential missile and drone threats to strategic infrastructure. For Greece, this deployment not only enhances its security relationship with Saudi Arabia but also provides valuable operational experience in modern air defense systems.
Despite the regional tensions, Greek expatriates in Saudi Arabia report feeling safe and express hope that the cooperation between Greece and Saudi Arabia will extend beyond defense into economic, professional, and cultural domains. They believe that continued collaboration could contribute to regional stability, stronger diplomatic relations, and lasting peace.
