Péter Szijjártó, former Hungarian Foreign Minister, has stepped down from his parliamentary role to join Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD in a senior capacity. Szijjártó announced on social media that he accepted what he described as “a highly prestigious offer” from BYD, where he will oversee external relations and spearhead the development of new business sectors. This career shift marks his departure from politics as he embraces a significant role in one of the world’s leading companies.
BYD, recognized as the largest producer of new-energy vehicles globally, is enhancing its footprint in Hungary with a substantial manufacturing facility in Szeged. This development is regarded as one of Hungary’s most crucial economic ventures and had received Szijjártó’s support during his ministerial tenure. In recent years, BYD has cemented its position as a frontrunner in the electric vehicle market, achieving sales of over 4.5 million vehicles worldwide and surpassing many of its major competitors.
Within Hungary’s Fidesz party, top officials, including Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, have been apprised of Szijjártó’s impending departure in recent weeks. With his exit, the party’s executive committee is poised to deliberate on potential adjustments within its parliamentary group shortly.
