The European Union faces mounting economic pressures as its trade deficit with China surged to €36.5 billion in July 2026. This growing imbalance underscores the EU’s increasing reliance on Chinese imports, with the bloc importing nearly three times more goods from China than it exports back.
According to data from Eurostat, the EU’s imports from China grew by 8% year-on-year, reaching €53.9 billion in July, while exports to China fell by 1.6% to €17.4 billion. This widening deficit, which saw an increase from €32.3 billion in the same month of the previous year, has raised alarms within European economic circles about the sustainability of such a trade relationship.
From January to July 2026, the cumulative trade deficit with China hit approximately €234 billion. This persistent trade gap has compelled EU officials to explore strategies to rebalance economic ties with China, a key trading partner. Possible measures include targeting imports in specific sectors such as hybrid vehicles and chemicals, where trade imbalances are particularly pronounced.
The influx of hybrid vehicle imports from China has notably increased since the EU implemented additional tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles in 2024. These hybrid models, which fall under different tariff classifications, have become a focal point in ongoing trade discussions. European officials are considering voluntary export limits on Chinese hybrid vehicles to alleviate some of the trade tensions.
With trade relations at a critical juncture, the EU aims to negotiate more favorable conditions in upcoming talks with China. The focus is on boosting European exports and reducing dependency on Chinese goods, particularly in strategic sectors.
