The growing defense ties between Greece and Israel could potentially escalate regional tensions, according to Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. His remarks come amid ongoing disputes between Türkiye and Greece over military activities and territorial issues in the Aegean Sea.
Fidan expressed Türkiye’s desire to maintain amicable relations with Greece but highlighted concerns over Athens’ military cooperation with Israel as well as the presence of Greek military assets on Aegean islands. Türkiye argues that these islands are subject to demilitarization agreements, a point of contention that continues to strain bilateral ties.
Despite efforts to improve relations, Greece and Türkiye remain at odds over maritime boundaries and the military status of certain islands. Greece insists that its defense strategies are a response to security needs and asserts its right to protect national sovereignty.
Aside from his comments on Greece, Fidan also criticized Israel’s operations in Syria, labeling them as a potential destabilizing factor for the region. He reiterated Türkiye’s support for Syria’s efforts to achieve stability and development, advocating for the resolution of regional disputes through diplomatic means.
Fidan also touched upon regional security collaborations, noting ongoing discussions involving Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. These nations are reportedly working on structuring a security partnership and exploring avenues for expanded cooperation, particularly concerning security challenges in Yemen and threats to Saudi Arabia. Through these partnerships, Türkiye aims to enhance diplomatic cooperation and ensure regional stability.
