Trump Warns of “Big Problem,” Offers to Fix Nile Dam Crisis

by admin477351

Donald Trump has issued a warning about the “big problem” facing the Nile River while offering to fix the crisis through direct diplomacy. In a formal letter to Egyptian leadership, the former President proposed a renewed mediation effort to resolve the standoff between Egypt and Ethiopia over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
Trump’s plan centers on a practical compromise. He suggests that Ethiopia should be allowed to generate “substantial amounts of electricity” to fuel its economic growth, provided that Egypt receives “predictable water releases.” This trade-off aims to balance Ethiopia’s developmental needs with Egypt’s existential requirement for water.
The dispute has simmered for over a decade, with the massive dam now officially operational. Egypt views the structure as a threat to its water security, fearing that unregulated filling could dry up the Nile during drought years. Sudan, situated between the two nations, also faces risks related to water flow and dam safety.
Trump has a history of involvement in this issue, having previously attempted to broker a deal during his first term. He has often claimed credit for preventing war between the nations, despite the lack of a signed treaty. His recent comments describing the dam as a “big problem” reflect his continued focus on the region’s stability.
By offering to resume mediation, Trump is positioning the United States as the indispensable arbiter. His insistence on “fair and transparent negotiations” backed by American monitoring suggests a desire to implement a rigorous, verifiable agreement that can finally put the dispute to rest.
