Netanyahu’s decision underscores Israel’s position that any premature troop withdrawal could enable Hamas to regain power in Gaza, thereby posing renewed security threats. Israeli intelligence reports indicate that Hamas is actively recruiting fighters, rebuilding its military capabilities, and acquiring more weapons.
The U.S.-brokered ceasefire framework being proposed includes several key components: Hamas surrendering its weapons, dismantling its extensive tunnel network, a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces, the establishment of a Palestinian technocratic government, the deployment of an international security force, and the reconstruction of Gaza. Despite the proposal’s comprehensive nature, Israel remains firm in its requirement for Hamas to be fully disarmed before considering any troop withdrawal.
In the meantime, Israeli airstrikes have continued, with recent attacks reportedly resulting in the deaths of at least 17 people, including children. Additionally, a major Israeli airstrike in Gaza City’s Sabra neighborhood led to the recovery of over 100 bodies, prompting a mass funeral by Palestinians. Rescue operations are ongoing, as many victims are still believed to be trapped under the debris.
The current conflict traces back to an attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, which targeted southern Israel and resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people. Furthermore, this attack led to the abduction of 251 hostages, triggering the ongoing war in Gaza.
