In a significant move to address the growing influx of AI-generated music, Spotify is set to implement new measures aimed at identifying and managing artificial artist identities on its platform. Starting in September, the streaming giant will introduce an “AI persona” label on both artist profiles and track listings for musicians created by artificial intelligence. This initiative seeks to help listeners easily differentiate between human artists and AI-generated counterparts, thereby safeguarding the visibility of genuine musicians.
Spotify has announced that AI personas will be automatically excluded from its personalized recommendation algorithms. This decision underscores the company’s commitment to ensuring that real musicians do not lose exposure due to the surge in AI-generated content. While artists can voluntarily disclose if their identities are artificially generated, Spotify will also employ a combination of human reviewers and AI-driven tools to detect any undisclosed AI personas.
The decision to implement these changes comes amid a rapid increase in AI-generated music. Spotify has previously revealed that it removed 75 million spam tracks within a 12-month period, highlighting the extent of the challenge posed by artificial and low-quality content making its way onto music platforms.
As generative AI becomes more prevalent in the music industry, transparency has emerged as a critical issue for both listeners and creators. Spotify emphasizes that it is crucial for listeners to know whether the artist behind a track is a real person or an AI-generated identity, reflecting a growing demand for authenticity in the digital music space.
