In a recent session of the European Parliament, members of Hungary’s FIDESZ–KDNP delegation expressed concerns over the European Commission’s lack of response to significant constitutional and political changes in Hungary. These developments, according to the delegation, may threaten the integrity of democratic institutions in the country.
During a joint meeting involving the Committees on Budgets and Budgetary Control, Hungarian MEPs Tamás Deutsch, Csaba Dömötör, and András László urged the European Commission to clearly state its stance on several pressing issues. These include constitutional amendments, limitations on political competition, modifications impacting parliamentary mandates, and the autonomy of state institutions.
The delegation highlighted that the European Commission had previously cited rule-of-law concerns in Hungary, leading to the suspension of EU funds. However, they pointed out the Commission’s silence on the most recent constitutional alterations, questioning whether these changes align with the democratic norms upheld by the European Union.
FIDESZ–KDNP representatives stressed the importance of uniform application of democratic principles across all EU member nations. Despite raising these critical issues during the hearing, the Commission’s representatives did not offer comprehensive responses to the questions posed by the Hungarian lawmakers.
