The European Commission and Hungary have struck a deal that will release billions in European Union funds that were previously withheld. This development follows Hungary’s commitment to enact a series of reforms aimed at increasing transparency and improving governance related to the management of EU funds. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has acknowledged that Hungary has started implementing steps to address these concerns, which include bolstering anti-corruption measures, enhancing oversight protocols, and joining the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Under the newly reached agreement, Hungary stands to receive substantial funding, earmarked for bolstering infrastructure, energy security, housing, transportation, and business development projects. As Hungary progresses with further reforms, particularly those concerning higher education and academic governance, additional funds may be unlocked. Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced that the total funding package amounts to €16.2 billion, which he described as a significant boost to the nation’s economic development and investment strategies.
One notable aspect of the agreement is the reinstatement of Hungarian students into the Erasmus exchange program, set to take effect from the next academic year. This marks a positive step in enhancing educational exchanges and opportunities for Hungarian students within the EU.
Despite these advancements, migration policy remains a contentious topic between Hungary and the EU. Prime Minister Magyar reiterated Hungary’s stance on border protection, emphasizing strict controls on illegal migration while fulfilling European obligations. He stressed the importance of safeguarding the EU’s external borders and made it clear that Hungary has no intention of establishing migrant camps within its territory.
