At the U20 World Wrestling Championships held in Bratislava, Hungary’s Greco-Roman wrestling team made a notable impact by securing three medals. Competing in the 130kg weight class, László Koppány achieved a commendable silver medal. His journey to the finals was marked by impressive victories over competitors from China, Kazakhstan, Georgia, and Egypt. However, in the gold-medal match, he faced a formidable opponent in Russia’s Ali Ilyasov, the reigning world and European champion, and was defeated 8–0.
In the 77kg category, Ferencváros wrestler Zalán Toplak earned his first World Championship medal by claiming bronze. Toplak’s path to the podium included a strong performance in the repechage rounds, culminating in a decisive 10–2 win against Giorgi Gogelashvili of Georgia. His victory not only secured the bronze but also marked a significant milestone in his wrestling career.
Another Hungarian athlete, Petro Zsitovoz, added to the country’s medal tally with a bronze in the 67kg category. Zsitovoz showcased resilience and skill, overcoming an initial deficit to defeat Egypt’s U23 world champion Mohamed Abdelrehim with an 11–3 score in the placement match.
The championships opened with the Greco-Roman wrestling events, where Hungary was represented by eight athletes in this discipline. These participants were part of a larger 22-member delegation sent by Hungary to compete in the championships.
