The state visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Germany underscores the strengthening strategic partnership between the two nations, a relationship that has evolved over several decades through political, economic, energy, and cultural collaboration. Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1972, the UAE and Germany have significantly expanded their bilateral ties, with trade and investment emerging as pivotal areas of cooperation.
Trade figures from last year underscore the importance of this partnership, with bilateral trade surpassing Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion), making the UAE Germany’s top trading partner in the Gulf region. Approximately 2,000 German companies, including prominent names like BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn, have established operations in the UAE, contributing to the robust economic linkage between the two countries.
The collaboration extends into the energy sector, where both countries have made strides in renewable energy, climate action, decarbonization, and energy security. In 2022, the UAE and Germany took a significant step by signing an agreement focused on enhancing energy security and industrial cooperation. This agreement includes the supply of liquefied natural gas from the UAE to Germany and the development of joint projects aimed at promoting clean energy and climate initiatives.
Beyond trade and energy, the partnership encompasses long-standing cooperation in research, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges. The elevation of political ties was marked by the signing of a strategic partnership agreement in 2004, which covers various areas, including regional security, economic cooperation, and research.
Despite facing global political and economic challenges, the bilateral relations between the UAE and Germany remain resilient and continue to flourish. Both countries are committed to expanding their cooperation across strategic sectors, reinforcing their enduring and multifaceted partnership.
